Achievement Unlocked!

To unlock this achievement, read the books referenced in this post. :) (Don't worry, I list them at the end -and they would fulfill your twenty-five book readings standard!)

It breaks my heart when kids and adults say they don't like to read.  I firmly believe that there is a book for everyone if we keep at it.  Also, for those whose mantra is "Truth is better than fiction," I think you might need to get better fiction! Reading is my life. I was the kid who got in trouble because she read past her bedtime and read under my desk during class.  That being said...

In my alternate fictional life:

I would totally be referred to with "The" in front of whatever name I crown myself and have a coat of crow feathers (much like The Morrigan).  Alas, with my penchant for flamingos, I will probably be decked out in pink.  I would have ALL the Keys to the Kingdom and might be a fallen angel in disguise.  I would definitely have a Krynn Dragon and hang out saving Arulen, Middle Earth, and Neverland.

I would be the "go to" girl for Sandman, trap demons with The Guild, befriend outcasts, and survive "accidental" biochemical warfare.  I would prowl the woods with my dogs, solve mysteries with the Bob-whites of the Glenn, and make my home at Wit's End. I might collect neckties, curious things, and secrets.  I would explore the deep blue sea, the 100 Acre Woods, supposedly deserted islands, and space stations. Ms. Frankweiler would never, ever do my filing.

And I would wonder and dream.  What IS an oubliette?  Why was Langston Hughes so influential? How would I disguise myself if I needed to?

There is so much more to learn about ourselves and others when we pick up a book.  Books are an escape, a retreat, a holiday, a way to wait in line at the DMV/doctor's office/lunchroom.  They can build bridges, bring comfort, or give us strength.  Books are a tool of survival - whether we are turning pages or clicking a screen.  In the immortal words of Dr. Who - "You want weapons?  We're in a library! BOOKS! The best weapons in the world!"
