Summer Reading List 

FCMS Book Lists

These are the books that each grade level will read during the school year. In addition to these books, some teachers may add other books/reading material. Any changes/additions to this list will be given to students at the beginning of the school year.  Suggested summer readings are listed below each grade's book list.

6th Grade:

1st quarter: Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: 101 Stories of Life, Love, and Learning by Jack L. Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and Kimberly Kirberger

2nd quarter: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

3rd quarter: Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank (Scholastic’s version of the book will be used in class. There’s more than one version of this book.)

4th quarter: The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

Suggested Summer Reading to supplement these titles:

Chicken Soup for the Pre-teen Soul and other Chicken Soup series, any of the numerous Gary Paulsen books such as Dogsong, other adventure books similar to Hatchet such as My Side of the Mountain or The Call of the Wild, Holocaust novels such as The Devil’s Arithmetic or Daniel’s Story, and other novels by S. E. Hinton.

***If you have read Hatchet, read the other Brian books (The River, Brian’s Winter, Brian’s Return, Brian’s Hunt).


7th Grade:

1st quarter: We will read several short stories in class.

*Advanced Language Arts students are required to select one of these novels to read. All students could supplement the 1st quarter reading with one or more of these titles: The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, or The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells.

2nd -3rd Quarter: (Required for all) Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor

3rd--4th Quarter: (Required for all) The Giver by Lois Lowry

Suggested Summer Reading to supplement these titles:

Through My Eyes, by Ruby Bridges, While the World Watched by Carolyn Maull McKinstry,

The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. Other books by Mildred Taylor: The Friendship, The Gold Cadillac, The Land, Let the Circle Be Unbroken, Mississippi Bridge, The Road to Memphis, Song of the Trees, The Well

***Only if you have read The Giver, Gathering Blue, The Messenger, and The Son are also suggested titles by Lois Lowry.

8th grade:

Anchor Texts

Bad Boy by Walter Dean Myers (Memoir of childhood:  Growing up)

Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen (War Fiction theme: Survival against tough odds)

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell (Nonfiction with the theme of Success)

The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer (Dystopian Fiction Theme:  Survival)
